Northern lights may be visible in New York, New Jersey: how and where to try
Sky-watchers in the New York City region may get a rare chance to glimpse the northern lights this week, as a burst of solar activity pushes the aurora further south than usual.
The northern lights were visible across a large swath of the United States on Tuesday night, including here in the Delaware Valley, thanks to a severe geomagnetic storm that hit the Earth's magnetic field.
A red glow in Cumberland County, New Jersey on Tuesday night was due to the northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis. The phenomenon in the night sky is due to a strong geomagnetic storm hitting Earth's magnetic field.
Parts of Pennsylvania and New Jersey are above the view line for Wednesday night's potential encore of the northern lights after Tuesday's display reached as far south as Texas.
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- The Northern Lights have been spotted in several U.S. states on Tuesday, including here in Pennsylvania and South Jersey. "This could be a teaser for an even more vibrant aurora Wednesday night," said Meteorologist Cecily Tynan.
