With temperatures warming, 24 cold-stunned green sea turtles and a loggerhead turtle have returned home to the cozy waters of the Gulf.

So far in 2025, a total of 102 cold-stunned turtles have been rescued, and rehabilitated by Houston Zoo with ongoing efforts to rehabilitate and return them to the wild. To track their movements, three of the newly released turtles—two green sea turtles and one loggerhead—were fitted with satellite transmitters.

The Mississippi Aquarium released 19 Kemp Ridley sea turtles. Kemp Ridley turtles are physically small but are a largely endangered species, so it was important for the aquarium to get them back in a space where they can thrive.
