A federal appeals court overturned a New Jersey law that blocked private immigration detention centers, citing interference with federal immigration powers.

The 2-1 ruling is a win for the private prison company that filed the lawsuit, CoreCivic, which operates the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement center in Elizabeth.

The ruling allows the Elizabeth Detention Center in New Jersey to stay open, where 77% of its detainees were designated as “non-criminal.”
