A freight train derailment in North Jersey altered NJ Transit service for Tuesday morning commuters. Cars on a westbound Conrail train tumbled off the tracks just before 7 a.m. between Cranford and Union in Union County, NJ.com reported. About 30 cars derailed, forcing the train to a halt, officials said.

The derailed cars were hauling dry goods so there is no health threat to the public, according to the company and Leverett Police Chief Scott D. Minckler whose department is overseeing the public safety response.
