Brent Venables cautioned John Mateer about rushing his rehab, warning the Sooners quarterback not to “defy the odds."

While it is unknown who will start at quarterback for OU football this week against Texas, the Sooners boast one of the nation's best defenses. Head coach Brent Venables also has all the confidence in the world in Michael Hawkins Jr., who threw for three touchdowns against Kent State, if John Mateer isn't able to play.

The Oklahoma Sooners will have a historic six former quarterbacks starting games in the National Football League this week. Three of those players (Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and Jalen Hurts) finished their careers in Norman, while the other three (Spencer Rattler, Caleb Williams, and Dillon Gabriel) finished their careers elsewhere.
