The quake struck at about 11:15 p.m. local time (9:15 a.m. EST) in the Pacific Ocean about 50 miles off the coast of Aomori, the northernmost prefecture of Japan's main Honshu island.

HAWAII, USA — Tsunami evacuation orders have been lifted in Hawaii, with no major damage reported on any of the islands. An 8.8 magnitude earthquake in far-east Russia triggered an emergency alert in Hawaii, which lit up phones around 1:30 local time.

The Cabinet Office is urging local governments to secure sufficient stockpiles and calling on households to advance their own preparations.
