From Dec. 10, young teenagers in Australia will be banned, under new legislation, from social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and TikTok — in one of the toughest online crackdowns in the democratic world.

Popular forum site Reddit has been added to Australia's world-first social media ban for children under 16 that starts next month. Live-streaming platform Kick will also be included, bringing the number of sites targeted in the ban to nine.

Australia's internet watchdog on Wednesday widened its world-first teen social media ban to include Reddit and video live streaming platform Kick, and said more sites could be added if their main role was to enable online social interaction.

Australia broadened its social media ban for under-16s to include some second-tier platforms including Reddit, a little more than a month before the world-first legislation takes effect.
