The United States on Wednesday designated Tren de Aragua, the Sinaloa Cartel and other drug cartels as global terrorist organizations, according to a Federal Register notice, a move that comes as President Donald Trump steps up immigration enforcement against alleged gang members in the U.

The Trump administration designated eight dangerous gangs and cartels, including Tren de Aragua, MS-13 and the Sinaloa Cartel, as foreign terrorist organizations.

The designation opens the door for possible financial sanctions against the groups and those who are linked to them.
