The National Weather Service is working to hire back hundreds of positions laid off or otherwise cut by the Trump administration, but it’s progressing at a snail’s pace, forcing many offices to continue to cope with vacancies that could affect winter forecasts.

An updated winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 3:28 a.m. EST in effect until 1 p.m. EST for Otsego and Crawford counties.

The National Weather Service issued a report at 7:26 p.m. on Sunday for snow showers until 8:15 p.m. for Berkshire County.

Several counties, including Summit, Portage and Medina, are under a lake-effect snow warning through 7 a.m. on Monday.

Temperatures will drop into the teens with wind chills possibly in single digits, according to the National Weather Service.

On Sunday at 1:11 p.m. the National Weather Service released a cold weather advisory valid for Monday between midnight and 9 a.m. for Berkshire County.

The further out you go in a weather forecast, the harder it is for meteorologists to know what’s going to happen. So how do they get an idea of what’s coming down the pipe several days or weeks ahead of time?

A weather alert was issued by the National Weather Service on Sunday at 4:05 p.m. EST for snow until 6:15 p.m. EST for Oceana, Newaygo, Muskegon, Ottawa, Kent and Allegan counties.
