Eddie Howe has confirmed that Newcastle United are “getting closer” to the signing of Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa. Ramsey travelled to Tyneside on Thursday night to undergo the first part of his medical after a £39million plus £4m add-ons deal was struck with Villa.

I think he gives something a bit different to other players on that side. He had a great season a couple of years ago, but he's had a few injuries and not really got back to those heights. It's a harsh reality that we need to sell players and Ramsey is an obvious choice.

Nigel: A good fit. Dynamic, can score, energetic and positionally flexible. All the attributes Eddie Howe likes in a young player. He will gel well with our current first three midfielders and I do not see him as a step down if any of them are unable to play. Jacob will get plenty of playing time.
