The New York Mets could find two smart solutions in a Cardinals deal, with Willson Contreras and JoJo Romero offering the right mix of power, defense, and bullpen stability.

Neither Contreras nor Nootbaar would replace the Alonso-sized void in the lineup, but both would fill holes in the roster. Contreras could slot right into Alonso’s vacated spot at first base, while Nootbaar would help cover the gap left by Brandon Nimmo, who was dealt to the Rangers.

As has been well-documented, the Cardinals figure to be aggressive in moving players this offseason. They've already traded Sonny Gray to the Red Sox, but also have substantial interest in Donovan, Alec Burleson, Lars Nootbaar, JoJo Romero and Contreras. There's less interest in Nolan Arenado, but the team is also trying to move him.
