Germanicus Julius Caesar (15 BCE–19 CE) was Rome’s most celebrated commander of the early Empire—adopted into the ruling line, beloved by soldiers, and treated by many Romans as the future they wanted. His legend exploded because he became the face of Roman recovery after one of the most humiliating defeats in Roman history: Teutoburg Forest (9 CE), where three legions were destroyed and their eagle standards captured. Under Emperor Tiberius, Germanicus was sent to the Rhine frontier. From 14–16
