Found one of my favorite edible mushrooms, a Butter Bolete (Butyriboletus autumniregius). It is a mycorrhizal species that associates with hardwoods and mixed conifers in the California coast. It has a reddish/pink cap (fades brown), yellow pores that stain instantly blue when injured, and an olive brown spore print. It’s a delicious edible mushroom, but can be mistaken for Caloboletus (inedibly bitter) or Rubroboletus (poison), pay close attention to the pore color and color of the stem to tell

Mushrooms are cool! Here I am cutting up a Liver Bolete (Suillellus amygdalinus). The purpose of this is to demonstrate the texture and characteristics blueing reaction. This is a mycorrhizal mushroom with a reddish cap, reddish brown pores, and has little dots on the stem. I find growing in association with Live Oaks and Madrones. It is technically edible but has a semi-sour flavor and is a look alike for the deadly toxic Satan’s Boletes (Rubroboletus sp.) so I recommend avoiding this mushroom
