A recent excavation in Pompeii uncovered a luxurious private bathhouse with features similar to a modern spa. Wealthy Romans used these spaces for banquets and status displays. A system called the hypocaust heated the rooms by circulating hot air from a furnace under raised floors and through wall cavities.
