I get asked about my writing process a lot in Q&A’s. This is a clip of us doing some improv at a soundcheck in St. Louis, and is a good window into how a song starts for me. There are some filler words in here that I’d go back and change but some of it feels right. I had tried another verse before this (we didn’t record it) but this one felt the most interesting, and like a good structure to build off of. Usually I’ll make a phone memo, find the parts that are worth keeping and then shape the re

“Not Afraid To Try” is out now, and I’m about to get on an airplane. I started writing it when @rorymcilroy lost the US Open last year. It ended up being about anybody who is in the arena and tries even though life is hard and failure is scary (also, with the @therydercup coming up I have to say I hope everybody plays well but that the USA dominates). | Ben Rector

These three songs mark the beginning of a new era for me. After a lot of years of friction between wanting to make the best art I can and the increasingly dizzying, frantic path to letting that art be heard and seen, I’m ready to try a different approach.
