What Causes Tides?

As tides move toward the coasts the sea appears to rise and fall. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) predicts the times of these movements based on the daily gravitational pulls of the sun and moon, but tide predictions are only astronomical predictions. Actual tides along Padre Island National Seashore are often influenced by weather and wind patterns, as they are most of this week. Therefore, tide predictions don’t necessarily represent what you’re actually going to see
