I found this Spined Soldier Bug (Podisus maculiventris) feeding on an oakworm caterpillar (Anisota spp.) yesterday. This predatory insect is beneficial to have around the garden as they often feed on pests such as fall armyworms, beet armyworms, and Colorado potato beetles. To feed, the Spined Soldier Bug plunges its hypodermic needle-like beak into its prey. It then injects digestive enzymes and takes in the bug slurry through its beak.
