In 2015, Ryyan Alshebl came to Germany after fleeing the war in Syria. Now, eight years later, the 29-year-old former refugee has just been elected mayor of a village in southwestern Germany. Alshebl traveled across the Mediterranean before ending up in Germany, where he learned the language and completed a traineeship in administration. In the mayoral election in Ostelsheim, a town of 2,500 people in the state of Baden-Württemberg, he secured an absolute majority of 55,41% on the first ballot.
