On April 19, 1943, the Warsaw ghetto uprising began when Jews imprisoned in the Warsaw Ghetto resisted Nazi efforts to liquidate the ghetto. The uprising is considered to be the largest act of Jewish resistance during World War II. Sol Liber was among the fighters who held the Germans off for 27 days. These photographs show the streets of Warsaw, and the ruins and flames over the Warsaw Ghetto. They were taken in April-May of 1943 during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, as the Germans began burning the ghetto block by block. The photographs by Rudolf Damec, a Polish man living in Warsaw, were rediscovered just a few years ago by his granddaughter.
