Around 50% of words are a series of closed syllables and around 20% of words contain open syllables. Kids just need to know the difference between long and short vowels to be able to work with these syllable types. 💡Closed syllables are where the vowel is “closed in” by a consonant…. (man, tac, hip).. and this makes the vowel short.
